Cancer Rehabilitation

MedStar Health's cancer rehabilitation provides a physician-directed, interdisciplinary program tailored to each patient's individual rehabilitative needs. These include:

  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • Chronic and acute pain
  • Decreased ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Fatigue
  • Impaired mobility (deconditioning, weakness, or loss of flexibility)
  • Lymphedema
  • Nutritional concerns (skin integrity)
  • Psychosocial difficulties (depression, loss and grief)
  • Safety/cognitive concerns (evaluation of assistive devices and adaptive equipment)
  • Spinal and brain injuries secondary to cancer
  • Vocational training needs

An occupational therapist performs a thorough assessment and provides a personalized care plan to help patients learn how to use time and energy efficiently, and a physical therapy program may be recommended for specialized, structured exercise for cancer patients.
