Thoracic Surgery

Ziv Gamliel, MD, is chief of Thoracic Surgery at The Angelos Center for Lung Diseases at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Harbor Hospital. Dr. Gamliel attended the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, where he received his medical degree, and completed his internship in Surgery and residency in General Surgery. Dr. Gamliel then completed two more fellowships, one in Lung Transplantation and the other in Thoracic Surgery at University of Toronto. He has also completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gamliel specializes in non-cardiac surgery of the chest, treating conditions that include lung cancer, bullous lung disease, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disorders, mediastinal tumors and tumors of the chest wall. He has extensive experience performing minimally invasive procedures. Ziv Gamliel, MD, FACS, named 2015 "Top Docs" by Baltimore Magazine for Thoracic Surgery.

Daniel Harley, MD,  is the surgical director of the Angelos Center for Lung Diseases, where he oversees the transdisciplinary team of specialists. Dr. Harley's clinical interest lies in treating environmental lung disease and lung cancer. Dr. Harley is not focused only on surgery; he helps give patients direction for their treatment. Dr. Harley is board certified in thoracic surgery and is a member of the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has published numerous papers, abstracts, and book chapters and given many national and international presentations on his work. Daniel Harley, MD, was named a 2016 "Top Doc" by Baltimore Magazine for thoracic surgery.

Richard Heitmiller, MD, is chief of surgery, Program Director of General Surgery and Surgical Residency Program Director at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He performs a broad range of thoracic procedures related to cancer of the lung and esophagus. Dr. Heitmiller received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and completed his surgical specialty training in general and thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Heitmiller, ranked in the top one percent of the nation's surgeons for esophageal and lung surgery by US News and World Report and was named a 2015 "Top Doc" by Baltimore Magazine for thoracic surgery.

 

 

Interventional Pulmonology

Francois J. Gregoire, MD, specializes in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at MedStar Harbor Hospital. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine, his clinical interests include interventional pulmonary medicine with a focus on advanced diagnostic tools such as endobronchial ultrasound and navigational bronchoscopy. Dr. Gregoire is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology.

William Krimsky, MD, is director of the Center for Interventional Pulmonology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine with specialty certification in interventional pulmonology, Dr. Krimsky has written more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles and abstracts on topics related to his areas of expertise.

Dr. Krimsky is an active member of several professional societies including the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Thoracic Society. During the course of his career, he has been invited to present at more than 50 gatherings of these and other medical groups. In addition to his work here in the U.S., Dr. Krimsky has travelled to China on four occasions to teach and proctor Chinese physicians in navigational bronchoscopy.

Saiyad A. Sarkar, MD, FCCP, FACP, DAABIP, is board certified in interventional pulmonology, critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine and has written more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles and abstracts on topics related to these areas of expertise. He completed his medical degree at the Saba University School of Medicine in the Netherland-Antilles, followed by a residency at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and fellowships at the University of Maryland, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and Hospital Sainte Marguerite in Marseille, France. Dr. Sarkar sees patients at the MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

 

Medical Oncology

Kevin Chen, MD, received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and did his residency, serving as chief resident in his last year, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He recently completed a clinical fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Chen's clinical interests include genitouring malignancies, thoracic malignancies and hematology. Dr. Chen practices at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

Lois Kamugisha, MD, is a medical oncologist board certified in hematology and medical oncology, as well as internal medicine. Dr. Kamugisha is experienced in treating a broad range of cancers with a specific clinical interest in breast and gastrointestinal diseases. She is the clinical research coordinator for medical oncology at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, which is part of the MedStar Health Cancer Network. As a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Medical Association, Dr. Kamugisha strongly believes in the importance of using her medical expertise to help others and has volunteered with organizations such as MedShare International and the American Cancer Society. She is married with two young children. Dr. Kamugisha practices at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital and MedStar Harbor Hospital.

Shweta Kurian, MD, has joined the Medical Oncology/Hematology team at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute. Dr. Kurian is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. Colon and other gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancer, and lung cancer are among her clinical interests. A member of professional organizations that include the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology, Dr. Kurian also serves as a reviewer for several prestigious medical journals. She is proficient in Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi and Gujarati. Dr. Kurian sees patients at the Weinberg Cancer Institute, as well as the Bel Air Oncology practice at the new MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

Mahsa Mohebtash, MD, is director of the Cancer Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and chief of medical oncology and hematology. Fellowship-trained in medical oncology and hematology at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, she is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. Dr. Mohebtash has extensive experience treating all types of cancer particularly breast, lung and colorectal cancer. Her clinical interests include cancer immunotherapy and cancer vaccine research and she runs a variety of clinical trials for several tumor types. Mahsa Mohebtash, MD, named 2015 "Top Docs" by Baltimore Magazine for general oncology and breast oncology.

Charles A. Padgett, MD, serves as chief of medical oncology at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Board certified in oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Padgett is fellowship-trained with more than 30 years of experience treating all types of cancer. Dedicated to the care of patients throughout their cancer journey, Dr. Padgett was instrumental in the development of the hospital's new Cancer Fatigue Program, which helps those struggling with this common side effect. Dr. Padgett is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Maryland Society of Oncology. When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Padgett and his wife, both licensed pilots, enjoy flying to popular destinations throughout the country.

Suman B. Rao, MD, is a medical oncologist board certified in hematology and medical oncology as well as internal medicine. Fellowship-trained, Dr. Rao is experienced in treating a wide range of cancers. Her clinical interests including lung cancer and breast diseases. A member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Dr. Rao is a strong proponent of clinical trials and encourages eligible patients to take advantage of the many opportunities to participate in such trials at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Dr. Rao is fluent in Hindi as well as English. When she is not practicing medicine, Dr. Rao enjoys cooking, particularly Indian and Italian vegetarian cuisine. Dr. Rao practices at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

 

 

Radiation Oncology

 

David J. Perry, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist, is chief of Radiation Oncology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and medical director of the hospital's CyberKnife program. Dr. Perry is one of a just a handful of physicians in the region certified in the use of CyberKnife, a state-of-the-art technology that makes is possible to treat inoperable or surgically difficult tumors safely and painlessly without an incision. He also has extensive clinical training in the use of brachytherapy and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat cancer and noncancerous tumors. He specializes in the treatment of gynecologic, prostate, lung, head and neck, genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers as well as sarcomas. Dr. Perry sees patients at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

Paul B. Fowler, MD is a board-certified radiation oncologist, specializes in the treatment of a wide range of cancers, including breast cancer. He is chair of the Cancer Committee at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and a member of the Cancer Committee at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, where he serves as physician planner for the hospital's Tumor Board. Dr. Fowler is also an investigator with several clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. A member of professional organizations that include the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, Dr. Fowler has been recognized as one of the region's Top Doctors by Baltimore magazine on numerous occasions. He is an avid gardener, enjoys traveling and loves animals.

 

Kamila Nowak Choi, MD comes is from Philadelphia where she did her medical training at Thomas Jefferson University and completed her residency in radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson University’s Bodine Center for Radiation Therapy. She has been trained in CyberKnife Radiosurgery and brachytherapy. She is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American Society for Clinical Oncology. She participates in clinical trials and is presently a co-investigator looking at the use of Telehealth in radiation oncology.

 

Kelly Orwat, MD received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina where she also completed her residency in radiation oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She also has experience in the use of stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy.

 

 

 

Radiology

Jill Bruno, DO is a diagnostic radiologist specializing in breast and abdominal imaging. She is board certified in diagnostic radiology and is fellowship trained in abdominal imaging. Dr. Bruno has a special interest in abdominal and pelvic MRI. She also interprets screening and diagnostic mammograms, including mammograms with Tomosynthesis (3D mammograms), breast MRI exams, and she performs stereotactic and ultrasound guided breast biopsies. She received her DO degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed Diagnostic Radiology residency and fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Flaim, DO is a diagnostic radiologist specializing in diseases of the breast. Dr Flaim is board certified in diagnostic radiology with fellowship training in breast imaging. Dr Flaim’s principal areas of interest are screening and diagnostic mammography including Tomosynthesis (3D mammography), breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and interventional procedures of the breast. Dr Flaim is a Baltimore native. She completed her residency training at Kettering Hospital followed by a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Maryland.

 

Michelle Townsend-Watts, MD chief of breast imaging for MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Townsend-Watts received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans, LA in 2001. She completed her preliminary year of internal medicine as well as her diagnostic radiology residency training program at the Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport Connecticut. Upon completion of residency training, Dr. Townsend-Watts became a fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center specializing in breast and body imaging. Following her fellowship Dr. Townsend-Watts joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where she became the director of breast imaging from 2008-2011. Dr. Townsend-Watts was most recently a clinical assistant professor as a member of the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2011-2016.

 

 

Patient Navigation

Ruth Evans, RN, BA, CNOR, OCN, is nurse navigator at the Angelos Center for Lung Diseases. She has been a nurse for more than 35 years receiving her diploma in Nursing from St. Joseph Hospital in Towson, Maryland. She earned her Bachelors of Arts degree from University of Baltimore and is certified in oncology nursing. As nurse navigator, Ruth assists patients in accessing the clinical resources they need whether it be making office appointments, scheduling surgery, or scheduling imaging studies, as well as, answering questions about their plan of care.
