Breast Surgery

Maen Farha, MD, is medical director of the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Breast Center and a faculty member in the Department of Surgery. Board certified in surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Farha has been diagnosing and managing malignant and benign breast disease for more than 20 years. Respected by both his patients and his peers, Dr. Farha has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Baltimore magazine. Maen Farha, MD, FACS, named 2015 "Top Docs" by Baltimore Magazine for breast surgery. 

Kristen Fernandez, MD, is director of the Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. She is a board-certified surgeon exclusively specializing in the treatment of breast disease and as a former Susan G. Komen Breast Surgery Fellow, is one of just a few surgeons nationwide to have furthered her surgical training with a clinical fellowship in breast disease. Dr. Fernandez has extensive experience with minimally invasive breast biopsy procedures as well as state-of-the-art treatment options including breast conserving surgery, intraoperative radiation therapy and accelerated partial breast radiation. At the Breast Center, Dr. Fernandez enjoys helping women understand the treatment options available to them and works collaboratively with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan. She is an avid proponent of regular mammograms for detecting cancer early when it is easier to treat. Dr. Fernandez was named a 2016 "Top Doc" by Baltimore magazine for breast surgery. Dr. Fernandez practices at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Harbor Hospital.

Atsuko Okabe, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in the treatment of breast disease at The Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus. Dr. Okabe has been dedicated to the care of breast disease for over 20 years. She has extensive experience with state-of-the-art treatment options that include breast conserving surgery, nipple-sparing mastectomy, intraoperative radiation therapy and accelerated partial breast radiation. She is certified by the American Society of Breast Surgeons to perform breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies as well. Dr. Okabe is a strong proponent of clinical trials and encourages eligible patients to consider participating in the research opportunities available through the MedStar Health Cancer Network. A Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Dr. Okabe is actively involved in community outreach to promote breast cancer prevention and early detection.

 

Medical Oncology

Kevin Chen, MD, received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and did his residency, serving as chief resident in his last year, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He recently completed a clinical fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Chen's clinical interests include genitouring malignancies, thoracic malignancies and hematology. Dr. Chen practices at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

Lois Kamugisha, MD, is a medical oncologist board certified in hematology and medical oncology, as well as internal medicine. Dr. Kamugisha is experienced in treating a broad range of cancers with a specific clinical interest in breast and gastrointestinal diseases. She is the clinical research coordinator for medical oncology at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, which is part of the MedStar Health Cancer Network. As a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Medical Association, Dr. Kamugisha strongly believes in the importance of using her medical expertise to help others and has volunteered with organizations such as MedShare International and the American Cancer Society. She is married with two young children. Dr. Kamugisha practices at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital and MedStar Harbor Hospital.

Shweta Kurian, MD, has joined the Medical Oncology/Hematology team at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute. Dr. Kurian is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. Colon and other gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancer, and lung cancer are among her clinical interests. A member of professional organizations that include the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology, Dr. Kurian also serves as a reviewer for several prestigious medical journals. She is proficient in Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi and Gujarati. Dr. Kurian sees patients at the Weinberg Cancer Institute, as well as the Bel Air Oncology practice at the new MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

Mahsa Mohebtash, MD, is director of the Cancer Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and chief of medical oncology and hematology. Fellowship-trained in medical oncology and hematology at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, she is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. Dr. Mohebtash has extensive experience treating all types of cancer particularly breast, lung and colorectal cancer. Her clinical interests include cancer immunotherapy and cancer vaccine research and she runs a variety of clinical trials for several tumor types. Mahsa Mohebtash, MD, named 2015 "Top Docs" by Baltimore Magazine for general oncology and breast oncology.

Yvonne L. Ottaviano, MD, is chief of medical oncology and director of breast oncology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Board certified, Dr. Ottaviano is fellowship-trained with more than 20 years of experience treating all types of cancer. Her clinical interests include breast cancer prevention and treatment and genetic risk assessments. Dr. Ottaviano serves as principle investigator for many of the breast cancer clinical trials at the hospital research that provides patients access to cutting edge therapies not available elsewhere.  She also participates in mission trips to South America to care for those in need of breast cancer treatment. Dr. Ottaviano, MD, was named a 2016 "Top Doc" by Baltimore Magazine for breast oncology. Dr. Ottaviano sees patients at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

Charles A. Padgett, MD, serves as chief of medical oncology at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Board certified in oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Padgett is fellowship-trained with more than 30 years of experience treating all types of cancer. Dedicated to the care of patients throughout their cancer journey, Dr. Padgett was instrumental in the development of the hospital's new Cancer Fatigue Program, which helps those struggling with this common side effect. Dr. Padgett is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Maryland Society of Oncology. When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Padgett and his wife, both licensed pilots, enjoy flying to popular destinations throughout the country.

Suman B. Rao, MD, is a medical oncologist board certified in hematology and medical oncology as well as internal medicine. Fellowship-trained, Dr. Rao is experienced in treating a wide range of cancers. Her clinical interests including lung cancer and breast diseases. A member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Dr. Rao is a strong proponent of clinical trials and encourages eligible patients to take advantage of the many opportunities to participate in such trials at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Dr. Rao is fluent in Hindi as well as English. When she is not practicing medicine, Dr. Rao enjoys cooking, particularly Indian and Italian vegetarian cuisine. Dr. Rao practices at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

 

 

Genetic Testing

 

Emily Kuchinsky, MS, CGC, is a certified genetic counselor and coordinator of the cancer risk assessment and counseling program for the MedStar Health Cancer Network. Ms. Kuchinsky has been consulting with patients and their families regarding genetic health concerns for more than 10 years. She conducts cancer risk assessment for patients and families with a personal and/or family history of cancer as well as genetic testing if the likelihood of a cancer genetic syndrome is high. Her services are available at all Baltimore MedStar Health hospitals

 

 

Radiation Oncology

 

David J. Perry, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist, is chief of Radiation Oncology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and medical director of the hospital's CyberKnife program. Dr. Perry is one of a just a handful of physicians in the region certified in the use of CyberKnife, a state-of-the-art technology that makes is possible to treat inoperable or surgically difficult tumors safely and painlessly without an incision. He also has extensive clinical training in the use of brachytherapy and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat cancer and noncancerous tumors. He specializes in the treatment of gynecologic, prostate, lung, head and neck, genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers as well as sarcomas. Dr. Perry sees patients at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.

Paul B. Fowler, MD is a board-certified radiation oncologist, specializes in the treatment of a wide range of cancers, including breast cancer. He is chair of the Cancer Committee at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and a member of the Cancer Committee at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, where he serves as physician planner for the hospital's Tumor Board. Dr. Fowler is also an investigator with several clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. A member of professional organizations that include the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, Dr. Fowler has been recognized as one of the region's Top Doctors by Baltimore magazine on numerous occasions. He is an avid gardener, enjoys traveling and loves animals.

 

Kamila Nowak Choi, MD comes is from Philadelphia where she did her medical training at Thomas Jefferson University and completed her residency in radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson University’s Bodine Center for Radiation Therapy. She has been trained in CyberKnife Radiosurgery and brachytherapy. She is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American Society for Clinical Oncology. She participates in clinical trials and is presently a co-investigator looking at the use of Telehealth in radiation oncology.

 

Kelly Orwat, MD received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina where she also completed her residency in radiation oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She also has experience in the use of stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy.

 

 

 

Radiology

Jill Bruno, DO is a diagnostic radiologist specializing in breast and abdominal imaging. She is board certified in diagnostic radiology and is fellowship trained in abdominal imaging. Dr. Bruno has a special interest in abdominal and pelvic MRI. She also interprets screening and diagnostic mammograms, including mammograms with Tomosynthesis (3D mammograms), breast MRI exams, and she performs stereotactic and ultrasound guided breast biopsies. She received her DO degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed Diagnostic Radiology residency and fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Flaim, DO is a diagnostic radiologist specializing in diseases of the breast. Dr Flaim is board certified in diagnostic radiology with fellowship training in breast imaging. Dr Flaim’s principal areas of interest are screening and diagnostic mammography including Tomosynthesis (3D mammography), breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and interventional procedures of the breast. Dr Flaim is a Baltimore native. She completed her residency training at Kettering Hospital followed by a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Maryland.

 

Michelle Townsend-Watts, MD chief of breast imaging for MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Townsend-Watts received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans, LA in 2001. She completed her preliminary year of internal medicine as well as her diagnostic radiology residency training program at the Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport Connecticut. Upon completion of residency training, Dr. Townsend-Watts became a fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center specializing in breast and body imaging. Following her fellowship Dr. Townsend-Watts joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where she became the director of breast imaging from 2008-2011. Dr. Townsend-Watts was most recently a clinical assistant professor as a member of the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2011-2016.

 

Reconstructive Surgery

Gabriel Del Corral, MD, a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon joins the MedStar Plastic Reconstructive Surgery team at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.  Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Del Corral has a specific interest in working with breast cancer patients.

Dr. Del Corral has extensive experience performing a wide variety of breast reconstruction procedures including the DIEP/TUG flap as well as several other flap techniques, the two-stage tissue expander/implant, and the one-stage direct to implant reconstruction. He is also highly skilled in treating patients with post-surgical lymphedema using the most advanced microsurgical techniques. This includes lymphatic surgery to treat lymphedema and breast cancer-related lymphedema.

He is a member of professional societies that include the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the American Society of Lymphatic Surgery, among others. He has been named a “Top Doctor” by Baltimore Magazine for plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, breast reconstruction and body contouring.
